Definitive Guide to AI Slop
Because someone had to set the record straight
Think of all creative work as a 2×2 grid:
Originality: low ↔ high
Craft: low ↔ high
Most of what’s good lives in three of those squares. Even low originality / high craft stuff can be fun — it’s formulaic, but clean. High originality in either direction is fascinating, even when messy.
Only one square truly sucks: low originality + low craft. That’s the creative uncanny valley — the zone of warmed-over clichés and lazy execution. The best we can do is love to hate it.
Now add AI:
AI can do craft. It’s a tireless assistant. But originality? Not so much. So AI lives on the top row. When it’s high craft, you get slick, competent entertainment (hello, K-Pop Demon Hunters). When it’s low craft, you get content sludge.
AI generated content is slop not because it’s artificial, but because it’s unoriginal. That doesn’t make it bad.
Humans make slop too. AI just scales it. When it is high craft, we can still love it.
